Using the L3 10G Industrial Ethernet Switch, administrators can easily improve network efficiency by automatically configuring Layer 3 static routing, RIP (Routing Information Protocol) or OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) settings. RIP can use the number of hops as a routing metric and prevent routing loops by enforcing a limit on the number of hops allowed on the path from source to destination. Using OSPF, the autonomous system is based on dynamic link-state routing. As a result of the exchange of link states between Layer 3 switches, a protocol creates a link state database. The Shortest Path First algorithm then generates a routing table based on that database.
